Hypnobirthing Explained: A Personal Perspective from a Hypnobirthing Teacher (Claire Fulton @The Nuture Nest)

Firstly let me introduce our first guest, Claire Fulton from The Nuture Nest and the host of the #1 Hypnobirthing Podcast.

Preparing for birth can feel overwhelming, especially with so much conflicting information out there. Many expectant parents are searching for calm, confidence, and evidence-based tools to support a positive birth experience — and that’s where hypnobirthing often comes into the conversation.

In this guest blog, we’re delighted to share a personal and honest perspective from an experienced hypnobirthing teacher and birth doula. Drawing on lived experience, she explains what hypnobirthing really is, what it isn’t, and why it has become such a powerful and popular approach for parents preparing for birth.

Whether you’re pregnant, supporting a partner, or simply curious about hypnobirthing, this article offers insight, reassurance, and clarity.

What Hypnobirthing Means to Me

By Claire Fulton

10 years ago, when my husband and I told people we were attending a hypnobirthing course
to prepare for the birth of our baby, we were met with plenty of raised eyebrows and more
than a few amused comments.

“Will you have your wind chimes and joss sticks ready then?” people joked.

We laughed along, of course. But the truth was, we already knew something they didn’t:
hypnobirthing isn’t strange, mystical, or fluffy. It’s logical, scientific, empowering, and, in my
experience, one of the very best ways to prepare yourself and your birth partner for labour.
From the moment we stepped into that course, we believed in it. And that belief has only
grown stronger over the years.

What Hypnobirthing Is Not

A lot of people assume hypnobirthing is “happy clappy”, everyone swaying around in a
trance, waving wind chimes and chanting. And honestly, I get why. The name is misleading,
and it’s completely natural to be sceptical about something you don’t yet understand.

Add to that the fact that most of us grow up believing birth is frightening, dangerous, and
something we simply have to cope with or get through, and it’s no surprise hypnobirthing
gets a few laughs.

So let’s be clear.

Hypnobirthing is not stage hypnosis. No one can make you do anything you don’t want to do.
I don’t put anyone into a trance, and I definitely don’t make anyone cluck like a chicken
during my courses.

It’s also not a method of pain relief. You’ll often see hypnobirthing listed alongside epidurals
and gas and air; but that framing misses the point. Calling it pain relief implies pain is
inevitable and simply needs to be managed.

While hypnobirthing never promises a pain-free birth, it can make birth significantly more
comfortable. Pain is subjective, it’s a perception of a sensation, and everyone experiences it
differently. Birth isn’t always pain-free, but it absolutely doesn’t have to be traumatic or
overwhelming.

What is Hypnobirthing?

So, What Is Hypnobirthing?

At its heart, hypnobirthing is about the power of words and the mind.

It uses techniques from hypnotherapy (hence the name) to gently replace negative beliefs
about birth with positive, empowering ones. It helps you understand how your thoughts,
emotions, and environment directly influence how your body works during labour.

Hypnobirthing also teaches deep relaxation, so that during labour you can remain calm,
focused, and comfortable. This allows your body’s hormones to work exactly as they’re
designed to, supporting birth to unfold as efficiently and smoothly as possible.

And perhaps surprisingly for some, hypnobirthing is incredibly logical.

On my courses, we spend time really understanding what’s happening in your body during
labour. We talk about the uterus, the cervix, and the beautifully coordinated way they work
together. Using visuals, videos, and props, we break it all down so it makes sense. Once you
understand the physiology of birth, it becomes far less frightening. It’s not mysterious or
dangerous, it’s simply your body doing what it was designed to do.

Why Choose Hypnobirthing?

Honestly? Because everyone deserves this knowledge.
On my hypnobirthing courses, you receive a full antenatal education. You’ll learn about the
physiology of birth, how the mind works, why it’s so powerful, and practical techniques to
stay calm, confident, and in control during labour.

You’ll feel empowered to make informed decisions that are right for you. Your confidence
and self-belief will grow. And you’ll learn everything you would at a traditional antenatal
class, plus so much more.

Of course, as a hypnobirthing teacher, I believe deeply in what I teach. And you might be
thinking, well, of course she does. That’s fair.

But before I was a teacher, I was a pregnant woman just like you. I was sceptical too. I was
also scared of giving birth and desperately wanted a positive experience. Using
hypnobirthing, I went on to have two incredibly positive births; and I’ve since watched
countless clients do the same in my role as a birth doula.

That’s why I became a hypnobirthing teacher and now a doula. To share this knowledge, to
change the narrative around birth, and to give other women the opportunity to approach birth
with confidence rather than fear.

If you’d like more information about my courses, or if you simply fancy a chat, please do get
in touch
. I’d love to hear from you.
