Affordable Pregnancy Must-Haves

Affordable Pregnancy Must-Haves

Pregnancy is magical, exhausting, emotional, exciting… and sometimes expensive. So, if you are wondering what to buy for pregnancy we are here today to talk about your pregnancy shopping list, now it does not need to be huge! Save money in pregnancy by purchasing reusable pregnancy items you can repeatedly use again and again.

Here’s the truth: you don’t need most of what social media tells you to buy. I didn’t use half of what I was sold! But let’s be honest when you are a first time mum, you don’t actually know what you will need.

I’m a huge believer in savvy parenting, cutting the pressure to overspend, and sticking to items that genuinely make pregnancy more comfortable, safe and joyful. I didn’t start off like this, I wanted new clothes for my little ones and I wanted to pick them myself…I have now learnt the hard way and that is that way of living is not affordable and is not sustainable either.

I now accept any clothes we are gifted and I try to purchase better options that are toxin free.

Below is the ultimate list of affordable pregnancy essentials, plus how to save money along the way.

Side note: I have even tried to gift friends clothes for their girls who are younger and mums have said no. These clothes where brand new with tags which hadn’t fit my kids.

A Supportive Maternity Pillow (Budget-Friendly Options Available)

Why it’s essential: Better sleep = better everything.

You don’t need the giant £70 snakes — a simple wedge pillow or second-hand U-shaped pillow works perfectly.

Savvy tip:
✓ Check local parent groups, Vinted, Facebook Marketplace or even your local Childrens Centre.
✓ Wash the cover — done.

You could even make your own with a sewing machine and fabric you already have:

Comfy, Stretchy Everyday Clothing (Not a Whole New Wardrobe)

Think: leggings, long vests, oversized jumpers, one good maternity jean.
You only need a few versatile pieces.

Money-saver:
Borrow from a friend → swap after birth → free capsule wardrobe.

Maternity clothing can be very expensive, buying a bigger size is a great option to avoid these costs or by buying second hand. Reason being after you are pregnant, you will no longer need these items unless you are pregnant again. Therefore they can be expensive to purchase and then only get 9 months use.

You could even use what you have, here is a great example:

A Reusable Water Bottle

Pregnancy = hydration mode activated.
Choose something lightweight you’ll use daily.

Look for:

  • Straw lid (helps with nausea days)
  • Fits in a bag
  • Easy to clean

This eco reusable water bottle is a great alternative if you need one, however it seems that most straw lids are plastic.

Magnesium Flakes or Spray (Proven Help for Muscle Cramps)

An affordable way to ease restless legs, cramps and general tension is by using Magnesium flakes or a spray. But obviously speak with your midwife first!

Bonus: Helps improve sleep quality.

A Simple, Stretchy Belly Balm

Forget £30 jars — you can use affordable natural balms or oils.

Great low-cost options:

This is more about comfort than preventing stretch marks (which are mostly genetic).

A Basic Pregnancy Journal or Notes App

You’ll want to track kicks, appointments, and the emotional rollercoaster. This is super important!

Keep it simple.
A cheap notebook works just as beautifully as a £20 guided journal.

Free or Low-Cost Pregnancy Classes

You don’t need the pricey hypnobirthing apps or classes. Most local places offer free resources to digest first, then if you feel you would like more guidance then reach out for the paid classes.

A Good Pair of Supportive Shoes

Your body is changing — your feet will thank you.

You don’t need new shoes unless your old ones have no support left. Trainers or cushioned sandals work great. Just make sure they are comfy!

Postnatal Recovery Prep (Simple & Cheap)

You don’t need curated recovery boxes.

Affordable essentials include:

Now to be clear, if you request a cesarean section you will not require the peri bottle. I bought one and ended up in an emergency c-section and did not use it. May be worth keeping everything in the boxes and the receipts and sending them back if you don’t end up using them.

A Supportive Circle (The Best Free “Must-Have”)

Talk to friends who’ve been through it.
Join pregnancy communities.
Share, vent, ask.
Support is free — and priceless.

Pregnancy FAQs

What are the must-have pregnancy items on a budget?

Simple items like a supportive pillow, comfy clothes, magnesium spray, and a reusable water bottle are the true pregnancy essentials that help with comfort and sleep.

How can I save money during pregnancy?

Buy second-hand, borrow maternity clothes, avoid overly hyped gadgets, and focus on versatile essentials you’ll use daily.

Do you need maternity clothes?

Only a few. Stretchy leggings, long tops and one pair of maternity jeans are usually enough.

What pregnancy products are not necessary?

Pricey gadgets, multiple maternity outfits, expensive skincare kits and trend-led items rarely used.

Do I need to buy everything new for pregnancy?

Not at all. Most items can be borrowed, hired or bought second-hand, especially maternity clothes and pillows. Check your local Childrens Centres swap shop first! And no, you don’t need to ‘swap’ you can just take.

Which pregnancy items are worth spending a little more on?

A supportive pillow and comfortable shoes may be worth investing in since they impact daily comfort.

How many maternity clothes do I actually need?

Usually 4–6 mix-and-match basics are enough for most people.

Are pregnancy essentials the same for every trimester?

Some items help throughout (water bottle, comfy clothes), while others — like support belts — are more helpful later on.
