How Families Can Save Money on Household Bills: A Mum’s Story
With the cost of living still affecting family budgets across the UK, many parents are looking for simple ways to save money on everyday household bills. From energy and broadband to mobile contracts, these regular expenses can quickly add up and take a big chunk out of the monthly budget.
The good news is that there are often easy ways families can reduce household bills without changing their lifestyle. Reviewing your current providers, bundling services together, or earning cashback on everyday spending can all help lower costs over time. Small changes to the way we manage bills can make a real difference to how far the family budget stretches.
At The Family Sustainability Hub, we love sharing real stories from parents who have found practical ways to save money for their families. Sometimes those ideas also open the door to flexible work opportunities that fit around school runs and family life.
Mum of two Kelly Levers from South Yorkshire discovered this while looking for ways to boost her income while raising her children. What started as a way to top up her teaching income has turned into something that also helps other families pay less for their household bills.
Here, Kelly shares her story and explains how she helps families review their bills, simplify their finances and potentially save money on services they already use.
Kelly Levers Shares Her Story
I’m a mum of two boys (aged 3 and 9) from South Yorkshire. Two years ago I was a busy Primary Teacher, working part-time so that I could spend more precious time with my boys. With part-time hours, comes less pay and my wage wasn’t stretching very far. Then I found an online earning opportunity that allowed me to top up my wage from home, completely flexibly whenever I could fit it in. 6 months into starting the business, it gave me the courage to quit teaching and find a part-time job that fit better with family life.
Two years on, as well as helping families pay out less, I also help others earn flexibly from home around busy family life. We have lots of parents in the team, and ladies on maternity leave, fitting this in around their little ones.
Flexibility is so important to me as a mum. I wanted to be there for the school run, the plays and sports days, but also wanted to earn a decent income so we could enjoy days out together and holidays as a family. This business allows me to have the best of both worlds and I love helping other families discover they can have both too.
What Do We Actually Do?
The best part is we’re paid to help other families reduce their household bills and save money on things they already pay for, which is so rewarding!
We do a free bill review with families using our simple online system. We show them how they could pay less for their broadband, energy and mobile sims by bundling them together with one company. This also makes life simpler as there is just one easy to read bill, one direct debit and one simple app.
It takes about 30-45mins to help someone and can be done either face-to-face or over the phone. Our head office then completely handle the switch so it makes things really easy for the customer.
Families can then save even more with our cashback card! Just using it for their everyday shopping means they never pay a full bill, as the cashback is credited to their bill at the end of the month, saving them even more!
How Much Are We Paid?
The work is completely flexible so you can do as much or as little as you choose each month. We’re paid £50- £300 per customer (about an hours work).
There are bonuses and incentives to work towards if you choose but no minimum hours etc so you decide what you want to achieve. There is no limit to the amount of customers you can help. Some people work full-time, some part-time, some an hour here and there, and the pay reflects the hours you are able to put in. (We’re paid the 21st of each month).
What Does Training Look Like?
Initial training involves a few short online videos, and a 45min training session over zoom, which is run several times a week.
Then you would simply earn as you learn. We do about 10 appointments together, which is usually over a 3 way whatsapp call and you would start by simply listening in, then build up to doing more as your confidence grows, but you’re paid in full whilst you learn and fully supported whilst you do.
- flexible work
- £50- £300 per customer (around 1 hours work)
- no experience needed
- full 1-1 support and training provided
- just £10 registration fee (refundable for 90 days)
- work from home (or anywhere)

Thank You to Kelly
Thank you to Kelly for her story and tips. For many households, energy, broadband and mobile contracts are essential monthly costs, but that doesn’t mean families should be paying more than they need to. Regularly reviewing these bills can often uncover opportunities to switch, bundle services, or access cashback that helps reduce overall spending.
For parents trying to manage rising costs, small savings across several bills can add up to hundreds of pounds a year. Taking just 30–45 minutes to review what you’re currently paying could make a noticeable difference to your family budget.
Kelly’s experience also highlights another challenge many parents face — balancing income with time for family life. Flexible ways of working from home, particularly those that can fit around school hours or childcare, are becoming an increasingly popular option for mums and dads who want both financial stability and family time.
Whether you’re simply looking for ways to save money on household bills, streamline your finances, or explore flexible income ideas that work around parenting, reviewing your current bills is a great place to start.
Sometimes the easiest way to support family finances isn’t cutting back — it’s simply making sure you’re getting the best value from the services you already use.
