Play Dough Play: A Simple Activity That Keeps Kids Entertained for Hours (Recipe Below!)

If you're looking for an easy, affordable activity to do at home with the children, play dough is one of my favourite go-to options. As a mum, I love activities that don't require lots of preparation, expensive supplies, or a trip out of the house, and play dough ticks all the boxes.

There's something magical about handing a child a ball of play dough and watching their imagination take over. One minute they're making cupcakes for a pretend café, the next they're creating animals, dinosaurs or entire miniature worlds. It's amazing how such a simple activity can keep children entertained for so long.

Play dough isn't just fun either. While children are squishing, rolling, stretching and moulding, they're also developing important fine motor skills that help with writing, drawing and everyday tasks. It's a fantastic sensory activity for younger children and encourages creativity, problem-solving, and independent play.

One of the things I love most about play dough is that it works for so many ages. Toddlers enjoy squeezing and exploring the texture, while older children can create detailed models, letters, numbers and imaginative scenes. It can also be a lovely activity for parents and children to enjoy together.

Easy Homemade Play Dough Recipe

If you've run out of shop-bought play dough, it's incredibly easy to make your own using ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

Ingredients

Method

  1. Mix the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large bowl.
  2. Add the oil and warm water.
  3. Stir until the mixture starts to come together.
  4. Add a few drops of food colouring if you'd like coloured play dough.
  5. Knead for a few minutes until smooth and soft.
  6. Store in an airtight container when not in use.

Safety Note

This play dough is not for eating. This homemade play dough uses common kitchen ingredients and is generally safe if a child accidentally tastes a small amount. However, it is very salty and not intended to be eaten. Adult supervision is recommended, especially for babies and very young children who still put objects in their mouths.

Play Dough Play Ideas

When the children need inspiration, we often try:

  • Making pretend cakes, biscuits and pizzas
  • Creating animals and farm scenes
  • Rolling snakes and worms
  • Forming letters and numbers
  • Building miniature gardens
  • Using cookie cutters to make shapes
  • Hiding small toys inside for a sensory treasure hunt

Play dough is one of those timeless activities that never seems to lose its appeal. Whether you're looking for a rainy-day activity, something to keep toddlers busy, or a screen-free way to encourage creativity, it's a simple solution that provides endless opportunities for fun and learning.
