Walton Gardens (Walton Hall and Gardens): A Lovely Family Stop for a Couple of Hours Outdoors
If you're looking for free things to do with kids near Widnes and Warrington, Walton Gardens is one of those places that’s perfect for a quick visit when you just want to get the children outside for a couple of hours. As a mum, I love having places like this on hand for after school, weekend mornings or when we just need a change of scenery and some fresh air.
The grounds are beautiful and really easy to walk around, with wide paths that are ideal for pushchairs, scooters and little legs that don’t always want to walk far. We usually start with a wander through the gardens or open green spaces, which is perfect for a bit of running around or a simple family walk without any pressure to “do” too much.
One of the biggest highlights for children is the playground, which has plenty to keep them busy, along with space for climbing, sliding and exploring. There’s also a small children’s zoo, which is always a big hit with little ones who love seeing animals up close.
Another favourite stop for us is the adventure golf and outdoor activities, which are great for slightly older children who want something a bit more interactive. There are also lovely open spaces for picnics, ball games, or just letting the kids burn off energy.
Children also love the ducks, turtles, fish and herons around the pond and feeding them (with suitable food) is always a simple but memorable part of our visits. It’s one of those small things that keeps kids entertained without needing anything complicated.
As a mum, I really appreciate that Walton Gardens has a relaxed feel. It’s not somewhere you need to plan a full day around – instead, it’s ideal for a short, easy visit of a couple of hours, where the kids can play, explore and enjoy being outdoors.
There is a café on site if you want to grab a drink, snack or ice cream while the children play, which makes it even easier to fit into a quick outing.
Walton Gardens is open daily:
8:00am – 8:00pm (April to August)
8:00am – 4:30pm (September to March)
(Some facilities such as zoo and activities may have separate seasonal hours.)
For families searching for free kids activities near Widnes, parks near Warrington for children, or places to take kids for a couple of hours outdoors, Walton Gardens is a brilliant option. It’s easy, accessible, and perfect for a simple family outing without the pressure of making a full day of it.
